Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY:Reports to Revenue Cycle Leadership. Under minimal supervision with an ability to work independently, this position is responsible for assisting uninsured, under-insured and insured patients/guarantors with their financial obligations for prior and current care. The successful candidate will be actively involved in discussion with patients and families to ensure accurate and comprehensive financial information is obtained; connect with patients in regards to a successful resolution of financial obligations (including prior balances); coordinate with insurance carriers to determine healthcare coverage and options; advise patients of available financial assistance programs and assist families in the completion of applications; collaborate with physicians and other healthcare providers to determine long-term care needs. Coordinates activities with clinics and hospital departments.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Screens patient for third party insurance using various computer programs and payer websites. Identifies hospital, public, and/or private financial assistance programs for patients unable to meet their financial obligations.
  • Performs financial clearance functions including, but not limited to, informing patients/guarantors of their financial obligation; going to bedside in the Emergency department, coordinating and collecting point of service payments (i.e. co-pays and deductibles prior balances); managing estimated out of pocket co-insurance liability; and collecting deposits.
  • Arranging payment plans as appropriate in an effort to resolve prior balances via letter, phone calls, and/or patient visits while in-house.
  • Obtains clinical information when preparing estimated cost-of-services for self-pay patients.
  • Works with current payer source to ensure care is delivered in an accurate setting -- to ensure that patient is seen at the correct health care center assignment, with appropriate referrals/authorizations per insurance requirements.
  • Works with the Department of Health and Human Services, clinical staff, and/or outsourcing company to assist patients/guarantors in completing assistance program applications and determining eligibility and coverage.
  • Communicates financing/payment issues to the appropriate representative in the financial clearance area for non-urgent or elective services to determine deferment or rescheduling. Advises Leadership of possible deferment or rescheduling of elective and non-urgent care.
  • Works with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure follow-up referral to appropriate primary care medical home utilizing our community partners and other area healthcare services.
  • Understands goals and performance targets and is accountable for delivering them.
  • Demonstrates ability to interact professionally in a variety of patient situations and adjust accordingly depending on the situation presented at time of service.
  • Documents all activities with patients, families, insurers, and providers regarding financial counseling in the appropriate computer system.
  • Visits emergency room self-pay patients in their rooms to assist in the application process for MI Bridges (Medicaid application).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required. AssociateDegree with course work in mathematics, accounting and computer sciencepreferred.
    • Two (2) years of experience related to patient admitting,registration and/or insurance eligibility and verification in a hospital ormedical office setting required.
    • Additional coursework in accounting, computers, financialcounseling, and medical terminology is a plus. Possess the ability to read,write, spell and accurately perform mathematical calculation in order tocomplete various functions related to account balance estimations, paymentapplication, and computing contractual obligations.Essential Technical / MotorSkills: Possess the ability to speak clearly and effectively. InterpersonalSkills: Customer service-oriented including the ability to interactprofessionally and handle sensitive information/issues in a confidential,respectful, assertive, and empathetic manner in difficult interpersonalsituations. Acts in a manner that establishes positive rapport with patients,families, and public/private financial assistance programs.Mental Requirements:Ability to quickly assess and respond appropriately to emergency situations.Ability to comprehend medical terms. Analytical skills to resolve complexproblems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technicalprinciples, and in-depth experience in multi-tasking. Ability to deliver consistentresults and possess the drive to continually improve processes to benefit thepatient and the hospital system.Essential SensoryRequirements: Ability to visually proofread typed work for errors. Ability tocommunicate via telephone to a variety of groups (patients, patients families,insurance companies, other departments, etc.)Other Preferred Requirements:
      • Ability to analyze and interpret information included in but notlimited to HFHS support application materials, IRS materials, credit reports,payer regulations, payer contracts etc.
      • Analytic skills to assess data and formulate appropriate andprompt sequence of steps to resolve patient questions or concerns
      • Knowledge of managed care and referral/pre-certificationprocedures.
      • Understanding and working familiarity with rules and regulationsof Federal, State and County programs and payer requirements.
      • Understanding and the ability to maintain patient privacy andconfidentiality.
      • Maintains a high level and global knowledge of insurance/managedcare requirements, and hospital policies and procedures.
      • Detailed and quality oriented with strong problem solving skillsand the judgment to interpret data and take appropriate action in circumstancesand situations which vary as well as act as a resource to others.
