Job Description:


  • The Materials & Sustainability Engineering department is seeking a motivated individual to join the newly formed Sustainability and Eco Design team.
  • This person will lead department efforts to develop and expand the use of sustainable/green materials for vehicle materials, components and systems.
  • Primary focus will be on increasing the use of green polymeric materials in current and future models, with a focus on meeting aggressive green content and net carbon reductions.
  • The role will involve cross-functional engagement with many organizations throughout the company (Design, Engineering, Purchasing & outside suppliers) to promote and expand the use of these sustainable materials in vehicles, as well as supporting other related product sustainability efforts within the department.

    Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Act as technical lead and provide guidance for one or more material data management engineers
    • Oversee the collection, sorting, organizing and compilation of both polymeric and metallic sustainable materials in current & future models
    • Track overall vehicle progress towards goals
    • Coordination with Global Sustainability teams to report out and maintain North American green polymers materials roadmap; engage suppliers for new developments
    • Develop and maintain awareness of green polymeric material trends and opportunities available within the current supply base and industry
    • Develop timelines and manage project elements necessary to meet project milestones
    • Develop technical report-outs on findings and present findings to Management
    • Work effectively & communicate in a team or independently, as required
    • Travel as needed to accomplish task objectives
    • Support related department sustainability initiatives as required


      • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or other relevant field from an accredited university
      • Familiarity with common product sustainability concepts and trends
      • Familiarity with polymeric materials used in today's automobiles, especially plastics
      • Strong writing, analytical and presentation skills
      • Direct experience with automotive materials in an engineering / manufacturing environment is a plus

        Preferred Qualifications:

        • Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Material Science or other relevant field from an accredited university
        • Two to four years of relevant experience (academic, industry or other)
        • Direct working experience with polymer materials used in vehicles, especially plastics
        • Experience with material suppliers and component manufacturers a plus
        • Direct working experience with common product sustainability requirements, concepts, trends
        • Experience with database analytics tools (Qlik Sense, Microsoft BI) is a plus
