Position Description:

FEV North America, Inc is seeking an Senior Machine Design Engineer to perform electromagnetic analysis, model and design of electric machines, electromechanical actuators, and sensors for electric and hybrid vehicle propulsion applications.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead creation and documentation of motor control requirements.
  • Designs and optimizes simultaneous system performance goals through requirements flow down. Understands and creates system and subsystem specifications.
  • Lead motor calibration activity.
  • Coordinating technical projects pertaining to electric motors and machines with cross-organizational teams.
  • Effectively integrates all aspects of a design using multi-disciplinary engineering.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure motor control requirements are met during component and system level testing.
  • Lead/Support hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, and functional safety activities related to motor controls.
  • Develop motor controls design verification test plan.
  • Troubleshoot various motor controls integration issues during component level and system level testing.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, other technical leads, and program manager to provide efficient solutions for prototype and production issues related to motor controls.
  • Develop next generation of motor control algorithms.
  • Benchmarking current state-of-the-art in motor controls.

    Required Qualifications:

    • PhD in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Electromagnetic devices such as motors, actuators and sensors or a Master's degree in electrical engineering and 5 years of relevant experience.
    • Advanced knowledge of brushless machines such as Permanent Magnet (PM), Switch Reluctance Motor (SRM), Induction machine (IM), and other magnetic devices
    • Knowledge of electromagnetic finite element analysis, modeling, sizing, and calibration
    • Experience with design and analysis of electric machines and sensors specifically related to vehicle systems - including machine design, inverters, and battery systems

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • PhD with specialization in power electronics controls or motor controls.
      • Strong computer/math skills, and knowledge of simulation tools (Finite Elements and Scripting Languages) is required
      • General competency in all core fields (electronics, electromagnetics, electromechanical)
      • Background in automotive engineering and power electronics and electrifications
      • Excellent problem-solving techniques
      • Knowledge of system synthesis, analysis, and verification techniques
      • Good organization and documentation abilities
      • Ability to manage and support multiple activities (time management skills)
      • Strong work ethic
      • Ability to coordinate and run efficient meetings
      • Ability to communicate effectively worldwide
      • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others across multidisciplinary teams
      • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
      • Good understanding of motor sensing subsystems (motor position, current measurement etc)
