Put your talents to work at Coherent where you can create and innovate enabling technologies that will push the frontiers of science and technology.We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the development of new laser manufacturing system product platforms for laser marking, welding and cutting applications in Plymouth, MI. This team designs automated electromechanical systems that utilize/integrate lasers to process materials in semiconductor, medical device, EV battery cell, industrial and automotive industries. This role is responsible for both technical innovation/design concepts based on customer needs and leveraging cross-functional teams to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery. They will identify root causes, evaluate optimal solutions, and recommend comprehensive updates to refine our engineering processes. This person will be in a highly visible management position, leading the Development Engineering team, effectively communicating, regularly sharing relevant status updates, and articulating issues and recommendations to senior management.     • Lead the development of complex laser-based material processing equipment
    • Pre-sale support: Leverage technical expertise to assist sales activity and sales team in the NA region
    • Solve customer issues in quoting process and in NA systems development
    • Assist sales team in creating quotes
    • Technical point of contact for customers and external partners
    • At the design stage, identify alternatives and optimization opportunities that could impact the design based on the strategy determined
    • Accept or reject changes in case of deviations from customer requirements
    • Assemble a project engineering team, identify appropriate resources needed, level resources, and develop schedules to ensure timely completion of projects
    • Estimate project budget (materials and time), monitor and attain throughout the project lifecycle
    • Support project schedule, technical documentation and training materials for development tasks
    • Facilitate a detailed system concept and proposal review meeting with team members from Electrical, Mechanical and Controls Engineering
    • Review layouts and designs with Design Vendors/Engineering Department. Coordinate meetings with the design groups and representatives of any other departments
    • Facilitate formal design review meetings between the customers representatives and engineering team members
    • Improve team performance by building team cohesiveness, leading, influencing, and motivating in order to facilitate cooperation, ensure project efficiency, and foster employee engagement
    • Measure project performance using appropriate tools and techniques in order to monitor the progress of the project, identify and quantify any variances, perform any required corrective actions, and communicate to all stakeholders
    • Represent project status through regular status reporting opportunities. Manage status communication with Project Managers. After project completion you will share best practices and lessons learned
    • Use leadership skills to ensure that cross-functional resources are held accountable for task and outcome completion
    • Support the Manufacturing kick off meeting and advise Manufacturing of any customer considerations, requests, and specifications
    • Ensure all as built redlines are updated on drawings as supplied by Manufacturing
    • Act as the driving force for the team, promoting cooperation and conflict resolution
    • Support the machine-build phase of production and successfully guide completion of FAT
    • Build and champion relationships inside Coherent and with customers with an emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and building trust
    • Maintain and improve existing engineering processes and tools
    • Review and advocate product strategy directions with company leadership
    • Generate excitement in engineering around the product roadmap and challenges ahead
    • Develop requirements alongside both internal and external stakeholders, including safety systems for automated cells
    • Post-sale support: Assist technical support colleagues in troubleshooting and fixing customer equipmentEducation and Work Experience:Minimum Qualifications:
    • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Physics, or equivalent discipline
    • 7+ years of progressive experience developing complex electro-mechanical systems/machines and tooling for automation
    • 3+ years of experience leading team members, giving feedback on performance
    • Demonstrated ability to perform in a distributed, diverse cross-functional team environment
    • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally up to 15% for onsite revalidation and customer troubleshootingDesired Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of Laser Marking, Ablating, Welding, and Cutting
    • Experience and expertise in laser-based complex electro-mechanical systems and tooling
    • Experience interacting with customers at their site to support production/commissioning tasks
    • Experience leading a product development team at a fast pace
    • Competence in controls, software, mechanical, and electrical engineering design
    • Wrike (preferred) or Microsoft Project experience
    • Previous experience in or exposure to a relevant key customer market such as semiconductors, medical devices, or electric vehicle battery cells
    • Ability to review CAD file using the required software Autodesk Inventor (preferred), SolidWorks, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical
    • Laser-integrated systems and optical systems-level design experience
    • Experience with robotic work cells and associated end effectors
    • Demonstrated ability and willingness to assist with hands-on prototype design/assembly and on-the-floor support of transfers to manufacturing/assembly
    • Proficient application of GD&T related to high-precision tooling and fixtures, including linear motion systems
    • Knowledge of applicable laser safety standards and OSHA ergonomic requirements
    • Vibration isolation, dynamics and motion analysis experience
    • Pneumatic component selection and system design experience
    • Experience with SECS/GEM implementation
