Job Description:

Works independently, following established policies and procedures, and performs investigative research in areas related to biomedical research. Assists in the development of new methodologies and prepares material for incorporation into publications or for use in laboratory procedures. Develops and tests hypotheses. Conducts experiments using various methodologies, including the collection and analysis of data. May act as project leader and resource person for personnel or laboratory related matters. Is responsible for initiating and writing scientific manuscripts for publication. May assist or be responsible for preparing and submitting grant applications to external peer review agencies.-- PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct and interpret various complex research procedures, analyses andinterpret data.
  • May be responsible for devising and implementing new methods and/ortechniques to be utilized in the laboratory. Incorporates procedures and/orequipment into research studies and trains research personnel whereapplicable. Assists the Principal Investigator when required.--
  • May be responsible for initiating and writing manuscripts for publication andscientific presentations. Compile, evaluate and organize data resulting fromresearch projects.--
  • May prepare and submit grant applications to external peer review fundingagencies (e.g. National Institute of Health) for independent research funding.--
  • Coordinate the planning and procedures for research with professional staffmembers and interpret these plans to research support personnel.--
  • Participate with senior research staff, graduate students, postdoctoral fellowsand summer students in organizing and interpreting data for their researchprojects involving a particular research program.
  • Initiate purchase requests for consumable items used in the laboratory.--
  • Order and recommend laboratory equipment purchases.
  • May coordinate the activities of research personnel responsible for datacollection, including instructing personnel in lab protocols and equipment use.--
  • Review accumulated data for accuracy and completion within thepredetermined time constraints. Assist with the preparation of scientificpapers and presentations. Ensure that research personnel understandradiation safety, IACUC and IRB policies.
  • May be involved in complex procedures that require exposure to animals,chemicals, radioactive materials, or other components that are routinely foundin a research laboratory setting.--
  • Research and review, at a sophisticated level, the scientific literature relevantto the research being conducted.--
  • Other duties may be assigned. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
    • A professional level of knowledge comparable to that which is acquired through obtaining a Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S., or equivalent degree.--
    • A minimum of one year of research experience.--
    • Research experience acquired while obtaining a PhD or advanced degree meets this requirement.--
    • Training/experience appropriate to meet the job-specific preferences as required by the hiring department.
    • Requires a proven working knowledge of various research methodologies.--
    • Familiarity with computer programming and statistics may be helpful.
