Job Description:
Position Description OverviewThe System Medical Director of
Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship is
responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of
the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial
Stewardship Program (ASP) policies and procedures in collaboration
with health system and hospital leadership and relevant
stakeholders. The Medical Director is responsible for overall
quality, safety, regulatory activities and performance
excellence.Roles and ResponsibilityThe primary role will be to
serve as the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control
and Antimicrobial Stewardship for Henry Ford
Health.Responsibilities include but are not limited to improving
and reducing hospital-acquired infection (HAI) rates; providing
subject matter expertise in IPC, healthcare epidemiology and
antimicrobial stewardship; optimizing utilization of diagnostic
testing and antimicrobials with subsequent implementation of IPC
and diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship process improvement
efforts; development and implementation of IPC and ASP principles
and policies in general and as they relate to reduction of
multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs); outbreak response and
special pathogens; interpretation of epidemiologic and
antimicrobial use data; improvement of data infrastructures and
data reporting in compliance with National Health Safety Network
(NHSN), CMS and other internal metrics; assists in coordination of
multidisciplinary initiatives; participates in committees; and
educates and mentors staff. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Management and Leadership
- Leads the development of the IPC program and ASP in close
collaboration with health system and hospital leadership and
relevant stakeholders
- Leads the maintenance of infection specific rates and
antimicrobial utilization at or below national best practice
- Leads the development of the annual goals and plan with
relevant stakeholders for implementation for review and
approval
- Leads system and assists with local infectious outbreak
investigations and ensures emergency preparedness
- Works with physicians, organizational leaders, community
leaders, and staff to promote understanding of IPC and ASP
regulations and functions
- Monitors detection and reporting of HAIs and antimicrobial use
on a systematic basis using NHSN definitions with relevant
stakeholders
- Assists with reviews of State and Federal regulations/laws
governing IPC and ASP to include JTC, and CMS Standards; advises
appropriate leaders and physicians of new and/or revised
regulations
- Keeps System and Hospital Leadership, Quality Office, Risk
Management and Legal informed of problems and assists in the
management and follow-up of IPC-and ASP-related eventsProgram
development and assessment
- Participates in or leads reviews, revisions and implementation
of IPC and ASP policies, procedures and quality improvement
initiatives to ensure a reduction in harm with relevant
stakeholders
- Participates in or leads committees when appropriate that focus
on IPC and ASP-related issues
- Participates in the evaluation of products which may influence
the occurrence of HAIs and antimicrobial agents for consideration
of use at the system with relevant stakeholdersEpidemiologic
evaluation
- Maintains a system for surveillance and reporting of infections
among patients and personnel and provides oversight and quality
assurance for the Department's surveillance activities
- Assures that IPC and ASP are in compliance with relevant
requirements promulgated by city, state, and federal government
agencies as well as those published by accreditation and payor
agencies
- Conducts drug use investigations and investigations of adverse
effects, or effects of inappropriate therapy in collaboration with
health system and hospital leadership and relevant
stakeholders
- Serves as a liaison to the City and County and State Health,
Departments, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention as
needed to fulfill the hospital's mandatory reporting requirements
for infections and in the conduct of outbreak investigations as
appropriateQualifications
- Applicants must have an M.D. degree, or equivalent, from an
approved LCME medical school, and have satisfactorily completed an
Internal Medicine residency program, and an Infectious Diseases
fellowship program, from an ACGME accredited program. Candidates
must be eligible for Michigan medical licensure and be
board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease
- 5 plus years of supervisory and/or leadership experience in a
healthcare setting
- 2 Two plus (2+) years of experience in ASP and/or IPC with
strong/expert working knowledge of infectious diseases, data
collection, and/or basis statistics
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a leadership role within an
academic institution
