Under the direction and responsibility of the attending physician or physician assistant, the Physician Assistant (PA) Fellow rotates through a 12 month didactic and clinical training program that will help to develop to enhance their orthopedic knowledge and skills. Utilizes advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in providing primary and/or specialized health care services to individuals. Obtains and records patient medical history. Performs physical examinations, assists with complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and invasive procedures. Orders, evaluates, and monitors medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans. Develops patient care and writes medication and other orders as prescribed by law. Participates in management of patient's care, before and after surgery, by facilitating, expediting and coordinating surgical procedures, writing orders for appropriate medical care, and determining need for consultation to ensure the continuity and quality of care. Diagnostic reasoning, advanced therapeutic interventions and education are key elements in the direct provision of care using a collaborative model. Performs as first and second surgical assistant in the operating room during surgery cases. May perform endoscopic vein havesting. Assists the operating room staff to facilitate timely start/completion of cases. Prepares discharge summaries, as assigned. Responds to emergencies; initiates treatment until relieved of duties by a physician. Educates and counsels patient and family members on condition, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery, and other related areas. Conducts and documents patient rounds. Sees patients under the direct supervision of a physician assistant or attending physician who has obtained privileges through the Detroit Medical Center Medical Staff Organization, or the attending physician. May prescribe medications and treatments, and order diagnostic tests as a delegated responsibility from the attending physician. Documents in the patients medical record according to insurance carrier reimbursement rules and regulations. GENERAL DUTIES 1. Obtains and records complete medical history of patient. * 2. Assesses the health status of patients through eliciting comprehensive health histories, performing physical exams and analyzing data to formulate appropriate diagnoses. Develops prioritized, comprehensive problem list and prioritizes/initiates interventions. Consistently collects patient data, which is prioritized according to the patient's immediate condition or needs. 3. Orders, evaluates and monitors medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans, including laboratory tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, blood products and interdisciplinary consults in collaboration with the attending physician or designee and according to established guidelines. * 4. Prepares, develops and initiates treatment plan for preoperative, perioperative and postoperative patients in consultation with attending and consulting physicians. * 5. Develops care and writes medication and other orders, as prescribed by law. * 6. Performs and obtains consent for routine invasive procedures, including but not limited to, venipuncture, nasogastric intubation, gastric lavage, arterial blood gases, and urinary catheter placement, as directed by the physician or designee. * 7. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, based on education, experience and departmental needs, as directed by the physician or designee. * 8. Educates and counsels patient and family members on condition, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery, and other related areas. * 9. Conducts patient rounds and documents assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan in progress notes. * 10. Responsible for a variety of patient care activities such as performing surgical procedures and providing pre and postoperative care. * 11. Performs as first and second surgical assistant in the operating room, during all surgery cases. * 12. Assists the Operating Room staff, as necessary, to facilitate timely starting and completion of cases. * 13. Prepares discharge summaries as assigned. * 14. Responds to emergencies and initiates appropriate treatment until relieved of their duties by a physician. * 15. Maintains and enhances expertise through appropriate educational and organizational activities. * 16. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures. * 17. Maintains a professional appearance and a clean/safe environment. * [BRASSRING IMPORT 11/1/16] Qualifications: 1. Masters of Science degree from an accredited program for physician assistants. 2. Licensed as a physician assistant by the state of Michigan. 3. Certification from the National Commission of Certification of physician assistants (PA-C) as a physician assistant. 4. Eligible for approval of privileges to practice within the Detroit Medical Center as an Allied Health Professional through the Detroit Medical Center Medical Staff Organization. 5. Eligible to secure a DEA license upon hire as required by the particular position assignment at the Detroit Medical Center.
