Job Description:


Under the direction of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Administrator manages the daily operations and delivery of therapy services in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards. Coordinates multi-disciplinary team services to achieve comprehensive patient care. Supervises, trains, orients and evaluates P.T., O.T., and Speech Therapists, assistants, office and support staff, students and volunteers. Supervises patient care, develops and implements new programs, policies, and quality control measures in the PM&R department and insures maintenance of accreditation standards.


  1. Interviews, selects, trains, schedules, conducts performance evaluations and when required disciplines department P.T., O.T., Speech and support staff. Recommends and enforces work standards.

  2. Develops, recommends and implements departmental policies, procedures and clinical protocols that will provide efficient and safe delivery of effective patient therapy services in the PM&R department. Recommends changes as appropriate.

  3. Gathers data, prepares reports and analyzes significant trends in departmental operations including program evaluation outcome reports. Recommends changes as appropriate.

  4. Provides and facilitates continuing education and monthly-formulated communication to department personnel specific to PM & R operations.

  5. Recommends department goals and objectives consistent with mission and goals. Establishes and maintains PT/OT/ Speech PM&R staffing levels to provide quality care. Facilitates cross-training of staff in multiple areas to ensure staffing to volume.

  6. Reviews operations and productivity for compliance to budget and initiates appropriate changes to correct variances for each of the 5separate cost centers.

  7. Monitors the maintenance of department equipment and ensures that expendable supplies are inventoried. Recommends new equipment and space utilization.

  8. Assists the Administrator in maintaining the department's compliance with all applicable standards, codes and regulations for acute care, Rehabilitation, and outpatient.

  9. Assists the Administrator in establishing, monitoring, and providing corrective actions of Quality Improvement measures for PT/OT/Speech acute care, Rehabilitation, and outpatient services at the main campus, and for outpatient PT/OT services and health promotion programs in assigned areas.

  10. Reviews research articles, journals, etc., to be aware of and keep up-to-date with developments in PT/OT/Speech/Health Promotion programs (i.e. treatments, standards, regulations, etc.) Represents the department on a variety of Hospital committees.

  11. Prepares and makes presentations as required.

  12. Ensures customer service and performance standards are established and maintained in her/his area of responsibility.

A. Education /Training:

  • Must possess a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate Degree in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Speech Therapy from an accredited college or university physical, occupational or speech therapy program.

B. Work Experience:

  • Five to seven years' as a physical, occupational or speech and language therapist in an acute care environment including three years of managerial/supervisor experience.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • Current license or registration as a Physical, Occupational or Speech and Language Therapist in the State of Michigan.

D. Other Qualifications:

  • Contact With Others: Regular interactions with physicians, patients, families, staff and administration. Maintains contact with insurance companies, vendors and professional associations to exchange information, make presentations and review services.
  • Analytical Demands: Conducts quantitative evaluations of the department and clinic's operations to ensure compliance with goals, budgets, and standards. Analyzes and updates departmental charge masters to ensure billing compliance.
