Principal among the assets that supports the efforts of Advancement is the data and information systems team. The Data and Reporting arm of the Business Analytics team is a critical component of the Advancement Information Systems and Donor Strategy unit within University Advancement.Basic FunctionA valued member of the University Advancement Business Analytics, Data and Training Services Team, the Ad-Hoc Report Writer and Data Analyst is responsible for but not limited to preparing, developing, modifying complex datasets and as well as project management and documentation of recurring request conversion projects in support the strategic objectives of University Advancement.The Business Analytics, Data, and Training Services (BADTS) team is responsible for meeting the analytics, data, and training services requirements for University Advancement. Their responsibilities include understanding the business rules for managing data in our Advance database, delivering ad-hoc reporting using SQL and Cognos, and understanding the reporting frameworks that are created by the BI Architect. Additionally, they are responsible for working with UA and IT stakeholders to understand business goals and requirements in order to quickly deploy reports and analytics that enable better decision making. The Report Writer and Data Analyst will provide development, testing, and support throughout the report development lifecycle.Reporting to the Assistant Director of Data and Reporting, key responsibilities of the Ad-Hoc Report Writer and Data Analyst include, but are not limited to, the following:Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities:Adhoc Reports Development+ + Understand University Advancement, AIS & DS and BADTS policies and procedures.
  • Analyze business needs to develop and edit queries reports written with SQL and Cognos for University Advancement audiences.
  • Work with users from a variety of business areas in identifying and developing queries and reports.
  • React quickly to changing business demands.Canned Reports Testing+ + Testing technical changes and enhancements produced by the Business Intelligence and Information Systems team.Provide support and best practices for BADTS team, Executive Leadership, and alumni relations and fundraising staff.     • Designated Supervisor/Project Leader - to receive assignments and direction, answer questions, discuss work and exchange information.Suppliers - to review products, resolve problems and exchange informationUnit Specific Education/Experience/SkillsKnowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business, Statistics or Mathematics with relevant course work in computer programming; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience information technology specialization related to Report Writing and Data Analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Desired QualificationsDegree in Computer Science, Information Technology or the knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program with similar relevant coursework; experience working with complex relational databases; experience managing data acquisition and data organization; proficient with SQL (1 year minimum); proficient with Cognos versions 8-10 (1 year minimum); training for Proficiency with Cognos Business Intelligence products such as Business Insight Advanced, Workspace Advanced, Query Studio, or Report Studio is required; experience creating multi-prompt Cognos reports with drill-thru capabilities; above average capabilities with basic tools of Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access and Word); strong analytical and problem solving skills; ability to clearly present solutions in business terms (in a non-technical nature); capacity to create new ideas for data and reporting solutions to address customers' business needs; able to work independently, and as part of a team; familiarity with Ellucian Advance system; strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are desired.
